I try to follow this rule even if I am the person making the call (esp. if I am the person making the call). This lets me know: * how much time I need to request permission for. * urgency * clearly be able to articulate the reason for the call. ( do I really need to call or should I send email because the issue is complex and it needs to be written down first to make sure I am going to be clear. Sometimes I have discovered that I don't understand the question I am trying to ask.) * and most importantly -- I know when it is time to shut up and hang up! * Know what I am asking for -- and be able to phrase the ask in a way that the other person can give a clear quick answer. If someone wants to reach you they PICK UP THE PHONE. The crazy idea that twitter, facebook or email is somehow better than the phone is misguided. Your time is valuable; if someone is not willing to make the effort to reach you, then it's probably not that important. This is great. I am adopting these too. Otherwise your business bleeds into your social and vice versa, you get nothing done and you have no fun.
